I like this quote because I think I remind myself of The Good Doctor in many ways. So pretty much anything he says, I probably would have said had I gone through his life experiences, so it’s basically like reading my own journal, not knowing I had written it. So hearing a King speech is half-amazement at how well my thoughts sound through a 39-year old southern black man, and half-self-congratulatory that what I say resonates so well within the African-American community.

I know he’s a bit controversial, I know I’m going to offend a few of you out there, like “Whoa, this guy is going to alienate half his audience? This guy must be pretty darn confident his material will cut the mustard when the shit hits the fan at the next ACLU conference. I think if you read this quote a bunch of times and read this cover-to-cover, then re-read the quote again a bunch of times, I’m pretty sure you’ll begin to establish some strong associations between my work and his, blurring our ideologies, catching yourself unsure of who you are quoting at your next funeral or poker game or at Panera Bread or whenever you quote Baudrillard on the regular.

This woman truly is a hero of mine. I just kind of liked her unbridled sexuality. The way she didn’t apologize for who she was. She existed. And I don’t recall ever reading or hearing about any kind of formal apology for that. Back in her day, that wasn’t something that just went unnoticed. She was sure of who she was and what she was doing and where she was and what might happen to her in the future. She was fully aware of all of it. But she still did it. That’s why she’s right here.
